Long day in the saddle today. In total, about 7 hours on the bike. First half of the day was spent in the inland areas and some of the poorer sections of Peru. The areas were quite sad. Dirt, dust, collapsing buildings, the stench of garbage and rotting fish in the air, I was left a little despondent by time I cleared the area. The second half of the day was quite the contrast. The Pan American Highway was actually a highway, no longer a small two-way road with a large-name. Newly rebuilt, with two lanes in each direction, and a full median. This is the first decent stretch of highway I've encountered since Mexico. The new section of the PAH was completely empty and ran for about 120 miles along the sea before cutting back inland. Beautiful vistas and cliffs abutted the road with no other humans, construction or disturbances to be found. I imagine it was like Northern California in the 1920s It was really quite surreal.
Tomorrow I head to Lima.
