I ran into someone from the US while changing my oil today. He has been here for 10 years and has the same bike I have. I asked what kept him here so long, and he responded with a hearty, "the riding is just too good to leave." Then asked me the second most common question that I receive, "how much did it cost for you to fly that bike here from Florida?" My response, as always is, "I drove it." With little variation, the following conversation always occurs:
Other Guy: What are you crazy?
Ken: A little bit, sure.
Other Guy: What does your girlfriend (always girlfriend, never wife, not sure if they think I have both, or in South America a wife would never let her husband do this) think of this?
Ken: I do not have one.
Other guy: Really, why not?
Ken: Motorcycles are cheaper and more reliable.
Other Guy: (awkwardly) Hmmmm, Did you have problems with criminals or bandits along the way?
Ken: Of course, but just the ones wearing uniforms and badges.
Other Guy: They are bad down here, so where are you going to?
Ken: Buenos Aires, flight to Miami, and then home to reality again.
Other Guy: Hmmm, ok, ...Good luck
Ken: Thanks
Today was errand day, laundry... check, oil changed on the bike... check, changed money at the airport (Colombian to Bolivian (next stop on the journey))....check, and took a nap...check.
Tomorrow my buddy Mike arrives, and we head off to Sacred Valley then Machu Pichu.
