Day 73: Lake Titicaca, Peru

This morning we headed out to the floating islands in Lake Titicaca, much to the chagrin of my 6 year old former self, is Incan for "puma rock."  I had read stories and seen pictures of the Uros (inhabitants of the floating islands) and their homes in the National Geographic when I was a boy, and I must admit, it was pretty neat seeing the islands and transportation systems in real life.  The islands are made of reeds and last about 20 years before they need to be replaced with new ones.  They were created as a result of the Incas running the Uros from their lands over 500 years ago.  Now here is where the question lies, if the Incas were conquered by the Spanish in the 1500s, why not move back to solid land.  I am sure someone there must of said,"hey look, the land is available now, maybe we should rethink walking around on these squishy islands made of grass."  Just saying.

Tomorrow we head to Arequipa.
