Today's ride was long, started in the mountains and ended at the sea, right at the base of the Yucatan peninsula. Took off out of Mexico City at 4:30 am and arrived, 9 hours later in Coatzacoalos. the first half of the trip was nothing less than amazing. Temperatures ranged from 44 F to 56F. The air was clean, crisp and invigorating. This country is more and more amazing every day. It is nothing like I had imagined it was going to be. The roads through the mountains were newly paved, and winded through the mountains for what seemed like forever. A motorcyclists perfect playground. There was numerous farms and wineries, at points I felt as if I was cruising through Switzerland. The way out of the mountains was a very fast decent, so much so that I dropped 8,000 feet in about 15 minutes. Last time I descended that fast I had a parachute strapped to my back. I popped out in Cordoba at about 10:00 am. I looked at my temperature gauge and it was quickly rising up past 85F, so I pulled over and did a gear change.
The second half of the trip was long, straight and hot, temperatures rose in excess of 100F. Thankfully, the vast amount of the trip though South America is in the mountains, which I absolutely prefer.
The farther I get away from the border, the more cordial the local population becomes. This is a motorcycle society down here, and the bike gets allot of attention. The police flagged me down just so they could check it out. I get 20 plus "thumbs up" a day, and whenever I stop, there a small group forms around the 1200GS.
If you look carefully, there are about 20 windmills on the hill in the background. |
